Sometimes, it is hard to change.
Remember the scene from Disney's "The Lion King?" You know, the one where the "mystic" Rafiki says to Simba...
Now, how many of you know the rest of the scene?...
It's not a new idea.
Throughout history, some of the biggest changes did not happen without resistance.
Let's take the great educator Socrates. When faced with the thought of learning from a "book" (no printing press yet!!), he argued that the written word can not teach anything worth learning!! (great post on this here)...
Speaking about the printing press, did you know it was feared that ready access to so many books could cause madness! For real!!
But wait... what about modern day computers, tablets and smart phones? Oi Vey!! I will let you google that one on your own!
My point is that, regardless of the "nay sayers," we must be able to adapt to the changes in the world around us. The HOW we adapt... well that is up to us!!
One technique - for schools - is to modify HOW we go about educating out children by creating an environment where students are no longer just consumers of information, but rather creators of their learning!
Over the last few months, on Technology: In Plain English LIVE Webcasts, we have been sharing how other educators and schools have embraced that mission and how you, today, at your own school, can become a catalyst for change. Our next LIVE Webcast will be...
My special guest will be Rabbi Abbish Rand, the originator of a fantastic integration of Talmud, Shulchan Aruch (Code of Jewish Law), Earth Science, Math and Project Based Learning. The case study Rabbi Rand will be sharing with us is the growing, harvesting and processing of wheat.
Now, some of you may ask, "what does that have to do with STEM/STEAM?" Well join us on Wednesday to find out!!! (Disclaimer: My wife Batsheva was introduced to Rabbi Rand's project and was so impressed by it that she jumped on board to help with the creation of written curriculum for his whole series of STEM/STEAM based projects.)

This LIVE Webcast is ideal for principals, as well as teachers, who want to infuse their Limudai Kodesh (Judaic Studies) with STEM and Project Based Learning.
See you on March 8th!
