Students at the Amit Strauss Technological high school in Kfar Batya, outside Raanana, recently held a major science fair, with hundreds of visitors from the town. Among the projects – a life-size simulation of the spacecraft the SpaceILorganization plans to send up into space next year.

The SpaceIL craft, being built as Israel's entry into an international competition, is about the size of a dishwasher, measuring 38 inches by 28 inches. Fully loaded, the craft will weigh about 300 pounds. The craft built for the science fairby ninth grade twins Gur and Kfir Meir did not weigh that much, as they did notincluded the sophisticated navigation and camera equipment being developed for the actual craft – but it did conform to the external design and avionics of theSpaceIL craft, evidencing a propensity for design and engineering by the two youths.

Other space-oriented projects included models of a space station that would be powered by solar energy and centrifugal power. The station would be self-sustaining, allowing humans to live aboard indefinitely.

Other projects sought to "remake" existing products and technologies, using engineering, chemical, and nanotechnology-based principles to build new and improved versions of things like the "Archimedes' Screw," a machine dating back to pre-Roman times that was historically used for transferring water from a low-lying body of water into irrigation ditches. Other projects developed solutions to help the disabled navigate their environment more successfully.

Rabbi Erab Strauss, principal of the school, expressed satisfaction at the event. "The students showed their capabilities and ability to think outside the box. Even the younger children here are able to create interesting solutions. Our aim is to enable the development of a generation that, equipped with the values we teach them, are able to lead the worlds of technology, industry, and science."

How are we doing with our kids and science fair?  Your comments are solicited!

I-Just-Had-To-Share-This-With-You

Remember back in April when I shared this post with you....

Two or three times a year, I share a video that just "tickles my fancy."  The criteria is simple.
  • It MUST be educational - showing how to do something new or solving a problem. (I love STEM and PBL)
  • It needs to show its solution in a way that is engaging
  • and finally, it needs to have some humor. (For those of you who know me well, you know the more "corny" the better!!)

Well, I just saw this in an email from the awesome folks at Pow-Tunes (www.powtoon.com) - and I-Just-Had-To-Share-This-With-You.

So, what do you think?  Does it meet my criteria?  Let me know on the blog!!

Is this the latest in On-Line Degrees?

If you have been following Ed-Tech, you already are aware of the rise and descent of the MOOC - Massive Open Online Course. (Unless you are Rabbi Shimon Bar Yochai and have been living in cave... and that wouldn't be so terrible!!!)

MOOCs were supposed to change the way Higher Ed (and all Ed for that matter) worked.  Classes on-line, free or minimal charge, take-it-when-you-want-to, and so on.  Unfortunately, it did not work so well. After about two years of "Mooc-ing", statistics started to show that out of the large number people who would start a course, only few finished it and most of those students already had university/college degrees.  And then there is the issue of (as I have been quoted as saying many, many times....) a boring lecture in person is even more boring on line!!!

So what what is the next entrant into on-line, Higher Ed?

Enter the "Nano-Degree." This is an industry driven, specialized degree that should take a student about 8-12 months to complete.  AT&T is teaming up with the on-line provider Udacity to offer this new program.

Give it a read. When you are done, come back to the blog and let me know your opinion.  Is THIS where education is heading?  Is THIS what we have to prepare our students for?  Do we need to be giving our children the skills in order to learn on-line?

What do you think?

Regards...

Real World Manipulatives on iPad

I will never forget the time I spent as a Paramedic Instructor Trainer (early 1990's) and my clinical rotation on a Brain Trauma Unit.

Here were people that had to re-learn simple tasks such as holding a fork and feeding themselves.  I remember one of the researchers telling me about the (then) leading edge research that conclusively demonstrated that handling physical objects makes a difference in brain chemistry that supports learning.

This leads me to one of my complaints about some of today's technology: Tech  can sometimes remove the "real world manipulative" from the learning and thus does not allow for a very critical early learning modality.

Now, before you say "hey, wait a second Yossie, there was a device that did...." I will admit that there HAVE been computer/manipulation interfaces that have been created..... BUT NEVER I HAVE SEEN ONE AS COOL AND EASY TO USE AS THIS!!!!!

I will let the below video say it all:

As always, your comments and thoughts are solicited. Maybe you know of another product that we should know about. Please post them on the blog.

PS - thanks to Joy Watt at the Crossroads School for letting me know about this great product.

Robotics and Programming for lower elementary school

As many of you know, I am a huge proponent for getting kids started with programming and robotics at an early age.  It has all of the requirements for great education - Manipulatives, Play, Higher Reasoning Skills, Collaboration, Student Ownership of Learning and so on...

So when I saw this on a web list that I belong to, I became so very excited!!

If you have students in elementary grades, then you need to check this out!  Very, very, very, very cool!!!

Here is the link to their kick-starter campaign: Kibo kickstarter

As always, please add your comments to the blog page!

Regards to all!

iOS 8.0 and AirPlay

Many of my schools are using the Apple iPad/Phone operating system called iOS.  One of the very neat features of iOS is the "AirPlay" that allows a Mac or iPad/Phone to live stream it's screen to an AppleTV.  Really cool - when it works!!

The problem is that in order to make this feature work on a school network, it can take some real magic! (No details... just take my word for it!)

Well, at the beginning of the week, Apple announced iOS 8!  (Yes, another upgrade to the iPad to make us all nuts!!!)

A cool upgrade to iOS 8 and the Apple TV is that YOU NO LONGER NEED TO USE WIFI TO ATTACH AN iPhone/Pad MAC, etc. TO AN APPLE TV!!

One is supposed to be able to walk into the classroom and using Bluetooth, connect directly to the Apple TV.  IF IT WORKS, this is great news - no more fancy connections that sometimes don't work.  Experience tells me, at least for now, don't give up your direct connect HDMI cable!!

As always, your comments are solicited (PLEASE PUT THEM ON THE BLOG - DON'T JUST EMAIL ME! Everybody should benefit from your comments!)

Regards....

3D Printer - Maker Labs

Jessica - the Tech Coordinator and Science Teacher at Oakland Hebrew Day School (OHDS) - recently shared her plans for remaking the school's archaic computer lab into a really cool Multi Use Area and Maker Space. (Thanks to Michael Cohen at Hillel Hebrew for finding the green screen set: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B009G6Y1Q8/ref=oh_details_o05_s00_i01?ie=UTF8&psc=1  a really great deal on Amazon)

Now, in my opinion, every maker space needs a 3D printer... but how to afford it??

To answer this problem...In steps the MOD-t from New Matter.  This revolutionary design has a 3D printer for.... wait for it..... $249.00!!!!!!  You must watch the video to see how their "unit is different from all other units".... (Pasover joke.....)   http://youtu.be/CGfLxACv3Qs  After watching the video, let me know what you think about their idea of "social media-izing" the designs.

Here is the link to their fundraising INDIEgogo site... www.indiegogo.com/projects/new-matter-mod-t-a-3d-printer-for-everyone

If my wife will let me, I am going to purchase one of these!!  (Maybe if I buy her a new shaitel first.... hmmmm....)

As always, your comments are solicited.  Please feel free to repost/retweet/scream-from-a-rooftop!

Regards to all... (and to my fellow Jewish readers - have a great festival of Shavuot!!)
